Indiana
Department of Labor Collaborates with
Safety
Resources, Inc.
Indianapolis, IN April 18, 2007
– Indiana Commissioner of Labor, Lori Torres has announced that the Indiana
Department of Labor (IDOL) and Zionsville-based Safety Resources, Inc. will
collaborate with the agency’s INSafe (formerly BuSET) Division to provide
Residential Roofing Training. Training will be offered beginning mid-May 2007.
INSafe, a Division of the IDOL
works with employers, employees, labor unions, trade associations, and other
organizations to strive for occupational safety and health management.
“Workplace safety is a collaborative effort that the IDOL simply cannot tackle
by itself,” commented Commissioner Torres. INSafe’s free services include:
onsite consultation, technical assistance and guidance, publications and
educational materials, and group training. “This training is an example of one
of the calculated efforts that the IDOL’s INSafe has taken to help ensure
workplace safety,” added Torres.
Agreeing with Commissioner
Torres, Safety Resources, Inc. Vice President Gary Gagliardi stated, “We feel
our responsibility as a member of the safety community is to lend our assistance
as we can, and are pleased to support INSafe in these endeavors.”
The INSafe/Safety Resources,
Inc. offered training will be free of charge and will take place in strategic
locations identified by the partnership. One four-hour class will be taught in
each of the outlined locations: Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, and Terre
Haute. Locations were chosen based upon the activity (number of potential
individuals affected) by residential roofing. “In 2005 alone, there were 110
‘Fall from Roof Events’ in Indiana. Of the 110 cases in 2005, 80% of the workers
affected were away from work for a month or more and two cases resulted in
occupational fatalities,” commented Deputy Commissioner—Quality Metrics &
Statistics, Elizabeth Friend.
Classes will be taught by
consultants from Safety Resources, Inc. and will be four (4) hours in length
discussing residential roofing statistics, IOSHA compliance requirements,
residential roofing best practices, techniques, equipment, and fall
protection—use of and types. All participants will be provided with the training
and necessary course materials at no charge.
