International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) is a non-profit association with beginnings from a task force assembled by the U.S. Department of Education to determine measurement of noncredit continuing education activities. IACET has since been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop and regulate the continuing education and training standard. The ANSI/IACET Standard for Continuing Education and Training defines a proven model for developing effective and valuable continuing education and training (CE/T) programs. This standard provides measurements in all aspects of CE/T programs and fosters the highest quality framework for learning and development.
IACET is responsible for the creation/maintenance of the ANSI/IACET Standard for Continuing Education and Training. Volunteer opportunities among members within IACET bring together professional training practitioners and leaders to explore the many facets of the CE/T industry. The plethora of perspectives offers an abundance of feedback that helps achieve one of their biggest goals of continual improvement. IACET's passion for excellence has driven them to develop the original continuing education unit (CEU), which is ten hours of contact time with approved educational material. IACET does not develop the specific learning materials but rather integrates proven learning theories which foster the highest quality framework for continuing education and training programs using concepts from Bloom's Taxonomy and Kirkpatrick's Learning and Training Evaluation Theory.
Professional engineers, certified health and safety professionals, childcare providers, wastewater operators, and management professionals alike are just a small portion of the licensed professions in the United States that require continuing education. Licensed professions and professional designations often require continuing education as part of maintaining certification. Various advisory and state licensing boards dictate the terminology for learning hours and content, but the IACET CEU is one of the most widely accepted forms of continuing education. Since the emergence of measuring noncredit continuing education activities, the terminology of the CEU has since entered the public domain and is unregulated. This terminology is why it is important to distinguish a CEU from an IACET CEU. Only Authorized Providers (AP) who have gone through a rigorous accreditation process proving their CE/T framework is compliant with the ANSI/IACET Standard are allowed to offer IACET CEUs.
Any course offered by an IACET AP for CEUs is structured from the standard framework with measurable learning outcomes and subject to ongoing improvements. The ANSI/IACET Standard for Continuing Education and Training is a proven model for the highest quality learning and is the core of thousands of education programs worldwide. As the official standard for continuing education and training, IACET Continuing Education Units are recognized by a wide range of organizations, including professional associations, regulatory boards, corporations and universities.
